Specifications
What is cotter pin?
A split pin, that is a metal fastener with two tines that are bent during installation, similar to a staple or rivet. Typically made of thick wire with a half-circular cross section, split pins come in multiple sizes and types.
How many times can a cotter pin be used?
Are cotter pins one time use? As a general rule, cotter pins should not be reused as the extra bending weakens the pin. This can lead to the pin failing where a new pin would not result in a broken lock allowing the nut to spin loose.
Whether made from stainless or zinc-plated steel, cotter pins are made to last once installed. Though the materials are soft enough to bend with a pair of pliers, these pins provide a strong, reliable locking mechanism once the prongs are bent into their secured shape.
